Attacks on Palin and the The Negative Media

October 15th, 2008 · No Comments

Attacks on Sarah Palin are all too common these days as our favorite Republican VP candidate has become something of a celebrity since her entrance onto the political scene. As we all know, the media is well known for its negative attitude to virtually everything.  Why is it that every campaign has a scapegoat or a scrub?  Last year it was Howard Dean and his bizarre scream.  Then we had John Kerry and his confusing political talk.

The only difference in 2008 is Palin is a female.  We all know that women take a harder hit from the public eye than men.  It’s just plain true.  Let’s face it – women have to look great, speak great, AND be respectable leaders in the political realm.  Men, on the other hand, seem to get away with everything.

The attacks on Sarah Palin have focused on a few key issues – her lack of experience, her media blunders, and her down-home style.

Let’s explore these, shall we?

First, the lack of experience issue is really a moot point.  Think of it – Barack Obama has only been in politics per se since 2000 when he joined the U.S. House of Representatives and 2003 when he became a United States Senator.   Governor Sarah Palin, on the other hand, has worked in official politics since 1996.  Hmmmm… something wrong with this picture?

As for the media blunders, once again I will defer to the female point.  If that were John McCain or Barack Obama in those interviews, no one would have been nearly as hard on them.  Think of the debate between Sarah Palin and Joe Biden.  Sarah had to be very careful with every gesture and facial expression.  Meanwhile, Joe Biden got to dive through questions like any other politically seasoned male.  Level playing field, I think not!

And, finally, what of that down-home style?  Why shouldn’t Sarah Palin make references to soccer moms and hockey moms?  Why shouldn’t she point to the “Joe Six Packs” and the like?  After all, this is the United States of America, and these are our people.   Sarah Palin issues are all over the news.  There is certainly something to be said for that!

All of these media attacks should really be interpreted as high-level media attention – not attacks at all.  The reason Sarah Palin gets so much attention is simple: she is an interesting candidate who draws us in and makes us want to get involved.  Anyone who does that for politics is an ace in my book!
