Sarah Palin’s children were very visible at the Republican National Convention. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee is a self-proclaimed soccer mom. She is quick to point out that she is proud of her children and that she supports her children throughout any problems they may encounter. Sarah Palin is married to her high school sweetheart, Todd Palin. They are the parents of five children ranging in age from 18 years to under 1 year.
Sarah Palin’s children were introduced to America at the Republican National Convention. Her oldest son, Track, is 18. He enlisted in the US Army on September 11, 2007 and was deployed to Iraq in September of 2008. Track and his unit will serve their country in Iraq for one year. Her oldest daughter, Bristol, is 17. There has been much controversy surrounding Bristol as Sarah Palin announced on September 1, 2008 that Bristol is pregnant and plans to marry the child’s father, Levi Johnston. Sarah was quick to point out that she and her husband, Todd, love their daughter very much and will be there to show their love and support as Bristol and Levi make this transition from childhood to adulthood.
Sarah and Todd Palin have three other children as well. Two girls, Willow and Piper, and their newborn son, Trig. All five of Sarah Palin’s children were present at the Republican National Convention. One of the cutest moments of the night was when, holding her new brother, seven year old Piper, licked her hand and rubbed Trig’s head in an effort to “tame” his hair. An endearing moment that reminds us that, though running for political office, Sarah Palin and her family are ordinary people just like the rest of us.
Is it fair for Sarah Palin’s children to be in the spotlight? The general rule is that when someone runs for public office, his or her children are off-limits, as it should be. The person running for office is Sarah Palin, not her children. The fact that Sarah Palin chose not to try to hide the fact shows that her family is just like other families in the US. They have problems, they face challenges, and the important thing is whether or not you face these challenges as a family or you let the challenges tear your family apart. For Sarah and Todd Palin, the choice is clear. They choose to let challenges bring their family closer together.
