The Sarah Palin speech was one of the highlights of the Republican National Convention. The first woman to be nominated for the Republican Vice Presidential nomination, Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech was just what the Republican Party needed – a breath of fresh air. As she stood on the stage with a spark in her eyes and a smile on her face, many everyday, working class Americans connected with her. Once she began talking, the connection was complete. Before the American people stood a self-proclaimed “hockey mom” – someone the American people can relate to.
If you watched the Sarah Palin speech, you saw a Mom, one that is proud of her family. Sarah Palin was proud to introduce her to her family to the American people and it was evident right away that her family fits the description of the typical family in America – a family that has ups and downs, and faces challenges – a family that faces their challenges as one, a unit, a team. A family just like any other family in America.
The Sarah Palin speech also emphasizes that small-town Americans are the backbone of our society. Small town Americas grow the food we eat, run our factories, and fight for the freedom of our country. Rather than growing up in the company of the “elite”, Sarah Palin proudly announced the fact that she grew up in a small town, the daughter of parents who both worked for the local elementary school – the same lifestyle as the majority of Americans.
Critics of the Sarah Palin speech are quick to point out that she did not express what she, and John McCain, plans to do about the issues that concern Americans, such as the economy and health insurance. Yet, she did, in fact talk about issues that are important to America. She pointed out how drilling for oil and using our own natural resources will create more jobs for Americans. More Americans job means more Americans with health insurance coverage and the means to support themselves without having to rely on the government – which means less money that the government has to spend. While Sarah Palin may not have used the language and rhetoric that the “elite” Washington insiders are famous for, her speech let Americans know that she is on their side, she is one of them, her family has problems and they work together to find solutions rather than let the problems tear their family apart. Have you ever seen a Hockey mom “go to bat” for her child? Can you imagine what would happen if America had a soccer mom?
