The 34th season-opener of Saturday Night Live featured Tina Fey as Sarah Palin. Now the star of 30 Rock, Tina Fey, who bears a striking resemblance to Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin, returned to play the role of Sarah Palin in the opening spoof. Joined by Amy Poehler, returning in the role of Hillary Clinton, this SNL season opener was one of the most eagerly anticipated episodes in the show’s thirty-four season run.
Tina Fey as Sarah Palin was a shoe-in as far as looks are concerned. What made this opening segment one of the best Saturday Night Live has offered, was that Tina Fey absolutely nailed Sarah Palin’s accent! While the skit was introduced as a non-partisan message, it soon became apparent that, while the two agreed that sexism was being unfairly bandied about by the media, they didn’t agree on much else. The discussion soon took a bipartisan turn and bi-partisan politics were the order of the day.
When Poehler’s Hillary Clinton persona brought up the subject of international politics and Russia, Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, exclaimed in a cheerful voice, “I can see Russia from my house!” While Hillary’s character blamed global warming on man, Fey’s Sarah Palin suggested that global warming “is just God hugging us closer”. While politics are serious business, as are the issues involved, for 33 years Saturday Night Live has come into our homes via the television and helped us to take the edge off. No matter what you believe and which side you support, a little humor never hurt anything.
Nor was poking a little fun at Hillary Clinton excluded as Poehler’s character soon began to show jealousy when Tina Fey as Sarah Palin stated that Hillary had gotten close to the White House and “I am even closer”. After a little sparring back and forth in true Saturday Night Live fashion, the two finally returned to the issue at hand – sexism in the media. And, while Poehler didn’t quite steal the show from Fey, her party line was one to remember! Her parting words invited the “media to grow a pair. And, if you can’t, I will lend you mine”. In all fairness, Saturday Night Live’s opening spoof poked fun at both sides while bringing a bit of humor into our world. And, with the looks and accent of Sarah Palin, Tina Fey stole the show!
